The Original Florida New World Mariner's Star was painted over a Florida road map using acrylic paints thinned with water to make washes that were applied in thin layers over the map to allow the place names to show through

The 13 rays coming out of the star are for the 13 original colonies and are the colors Spanish explorer Coronado carried on his 1540 expedition of the area

This gives the artwork depth and texture (by applying plaster) and a beautiful "glow" because of the silver leaf used and the antiquing stain applied in many layers

The original background was done with copper patina for the sky and rust oxidized paint for the ground. I used Caboshons in the shape of raindrops. Where the ground and the sky merge i used the molten metal process to give a look of a river.
