Kaori no miya, a workshop in Itoshima, Fukuoka, finishes each of these wooden incense burners by hand from hinoki cypress thinned from the Sefuri mountains, the range that feeds the rivers of Fukuoka and Saga. Wood cut to keep the forest healthy is reborn here as a tool for scent. Its defining feature is a design that lets you burn an incense stick lying down: it will not tip over, the ash does
